Version 2.x of TACACS.net is called TACACS.net Advanced. TACACS.net Advanced Version comes with performance and stability improvements, compatibility with legacy devices, feature improvements, security updates, software maintenance and technical support. This version was built to meet the operational needs and network security requirements of Enterprise organizations.
Windows & .Net compatibility
TACACS.net Advanced upgrades from .Net 2.0 to .Net 4.5. This improves performance, but drops support for some legacy versions of Windows. .Net 4.5 is only available in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 or later. TACACS.net Advanced is not compatible with Windows 2000 Workstation or Server, Windows XP, or Windows 2003 Server. These operating system versions are no longer supported by Microsoft, and should not be run in an Enterprise network.
End of Support for TACACS.net 1.x
When Microsoft ended support for Windows 2003 Server in July 2015, that effectively ended support for .Net versions prior to 4.5. Network operators who comply with security best practices are prohibited from running operating systems that are no longer supported by the manufacturer because they will no longer issue security patches or fixes. Since it’s no longer supported by Microsoft and enterprise networks cannot use it any more, there is no justification to maintaining backwards compatibility with these legacy versions. We will no longer offer support for TACACS.net 1.x and encourage all users to upgrade to the Advanced version.
TACACS.net 1.x continued availability
Previous versions of TACACS.net will continue to be available for free download. They can be run on newer versions of Microsoft Windows, but will not have the new performance improvements, security updates, new features, or bugfixes. TACACS.net Advanced is available to customers with an active support contract.
